Sumbit your paper or proposal here today.

The 2010 Spring Meeting of the Society for the Anthropology of North America and the Association of Black Anthropology will be held April 15-17 in Denver, CO at University of Colorado, Denver.

The Program Committee welcomes proposals for individual papers and formal sessions, and especially sessions using alternative formats. This joint 2010 meeting warmly invites proposals for papers and presentations to be held in joint sessions or by either one of the sponsoring societies.

Proposals will be accepted according to the following three categories:

  • Individual proposals. Proposals should represent the subject/theme as fully as possible. A successful proposal typically articulates the main aspects of the argument or research findings clearly, positions the author’s contribution with respect to earlier work, and suggests the paper’s significance for the SANA community. Maximum length: 350 words.
  • Formal sessions. An organizer representing several individuals may propose a Formal Session, from two to five papers. For this proposal, organizers should prepare a rationale, explaining the importance of the topic and the proposed constituent papers, together with the names of the organizer, participants, respondent (if applicable), and a suggested chairperson. The organizer should also include a proposal for each paper, which conforms to the guidelines for individual proposals above. Formal Session proposals will be considered as a unit, accepted or rejected as a whole. Maximum length: 350 words for the rationale, 350 words for each constituent proposal.
  • Alternative formats. The Denver meeting will include a block of time utilizing alternative formats, i.e. activities other than “traditional” papers. Examples of alternative formats include, but are not limited to, sessions combining performance and scholarship, sessions discussing an important publication, position papers, sessions featuring debate on a controversial issue, and sessions devoted to discussion of papers posted online before the meeting. Sessions may be proposed by: an individual or group of individuals, by a Study Group, by a smaller society that has traditionally met during the Annual Meeting, or by an SANA/ABA committee wishing to explore scholarly issues. Proposals for alternative format sessions should outline the intellectual content of the session, the individuals who will take part, and the structure of the session. Maximum length: 500 words.

Length of presentations for traditional proposals: 90 minutes are allotted for each formal session proposal. The length of each presentation is limited to the number of minutes divided by the number of participants (including a potential discussant).

Length of presentation for alternative format: 90 minutes are allotted for each alternative format. Participants can determine how best to allocate their time.

An individual can appear only two times on the program.

Proposals must be received by 5:00 P.M. EST, Saturday, 27 February 2010 via email to abasana2010@gmail.com For help, contact the above email or refer to the SANA or ABA website.
