SANA 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award Goes to Professor Lynn Bolles!
The SANA Prize for Distinguished Achievement in the Critical Study of North America is awarded annually to a senior anthropologist for broad-based contributions to research, teaching and service related to the development of critical studies of North America, including the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This award recognizes a distinguished long-term program of research and publication and takes into account contributions in other areas, such as teaching and training, SANA/AAA service, and community, activist, practice, or policy involvements outside academia.
The SANA Board is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2023 SANA Prize for Distinguished Achievement in the Critical Study of North America is Professor Lynn Bolles. This award recognizes Professor Bolles’ many years of distinguished scholarship and teaching and her numerous contributions to the disciplines of Anthropology, Women’s Studies, and African American Studies. Professor Bolles’ multiple publications, including several books on Caribbean women, have provided critical analyses of the ways in which Caribbean economies are tied to the actions of an imperialist United States. Her work on the ways in which Anthropology has been shaped by ideas about race, gender, and class goes to the heart of how structural inequalities can be both reproduced and challenged by our discipline.
Professor Bolles is a past president of SANA (2009–2011). She has also served as the President of several other sections of the AAA, including the Association of Black Anthropologists and the Association for Feminist Anthropology, in addition to her work as a member of the Executive Board of the American Anthropological Association.
Professor Bolles will receive her award at the Business Meeting of SANA during the next meeting of the American Anthropological Association in Toronto in November. We invite everyone to join us for this occasion and to help us recognize the many contributions of Professor Lynn Bolles.
