SANA BIENNIAL SPRING 2027 CONFERENCE
We invite you to the 2027 Biennial Society for the Anthropology of North America (SANA) spring meeting, held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA). Please join us at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott in Norfolk, VA from March 23 through March 27. This year’s conference theme is FUTURES, FRACTURES, AND FISSURES.
SANA’s Call For Papers: In our thinking of Futures, Fractures, and Fixes in North America, SANA considers the sociopolitical histories, current impacts of, and alternatives to colonialism, imperialism, and racial capitalism on the peoples, places, and relations that make up this continent and its islands. We are especially interested in proposals that explore the conference themes vis a vis territorial borders, citizenships, ecologies and environments, and medicine. We welcome papers on all of North America, including Mexico, the United States, Canada, Indian nations, and U.S. territories. SANA also encourages discussions of the transnational links between North America and the rest of the world.
Submission Guidelines: When submitting your proposal, make sure to select SANA as your reviewing section (this step is distinct from selecting your registration membership), and that your SANA membership is current. For questions, please contact conference chairs Liliana Ramirez: mlramir1@uci.edu and Claudia Strauss: claudia_strauss@pitzer.edu
The deadline for proposals is October 15, 2026. For information about panel, paper, and poster options, go to https://appliedanthro.org/annual-meeting/information-logistics/abstract-information/
Before you submit a proposal, you will need to register for the conference: https://appliedanthro.org/annual-meeting/annual-meeting-registration/
The co-sponsored conference agreement is nuanced; please use the following registration steps as your guide and note that SANA attendees may register at the “Member” rate.
1) After you click on the “Registration” button, you will come to the SfAA Membership page.
2) Under “Member Type,” choose “No, thank you” if you want to decline joining SfAA at this time. (You may always join SfAA, but only need to belong to one co-sponsoring organization in order to register at the member rate).
3) Proceed to register through a cosponsoring organization and choose SANA. If you are a member of both SANA and SfAA, please register as a SANA member and receive notice of our special SANA-member events!
